‘Our own species without ambiguity is precipitating its own extinction. The scientists are our only hope for our future’.

 This is an extract from that passionate and beautifully crafted speech by Chris Packham on BBC2’s ‘ Icons, The greatest Person of the 20^th Century’.  It’s one that hit the heart and the head (if you’ve not seen it you must!) and for Thread Tales, a sustainable accessories brand, sums up their passion for finding and using innovative, planet-saving fabrics. One such fabric is SeaCell, a wonderful collaboration of science and nature.

SeaCell is produced from seaweed using the Lyocell process; an eco-friendly production method with zero chemical waste. Seaweed cultivation requires no farming; it is collected using gentle, renewable harvesting techniques, preserving the incredible natural environment of the Icelandic Fjords in which it grows. SeaCell is also 100% biodegradable.

‘SeaCell is especially lovely to work with as it has beautiful and natural properties’, enthuses Maunder who is known for her meticulous attention to quality and detail. ‘It is light, breathable, and absorbs sweat faster than cotton’. SeaCell is known as a ‘wellness fibre’ - nutrients and anti-oxidants contained in the seaweed are retained in the fabric, which the skin can then absorb through natural body moisture.

 SeaCell also works well with other sustainable yarns. Thread Tales are pioneers in creating their own unique and gorgeous fabrics and have blended SeaCell with grade A certified Cashmere (not all cashmere is created equal - always check the sustainable credentials of yours). The result is a warm but light fabric with just the right amount of weight to feel cosy.

 The fashion world is responsible for more pollution than the shipping and aviation industries combined. Fabrics such as polyester and acrylic pollute the water with 1000’s of micro plastic fibres every time they are washed, down the drain, into the sewage and then to the marine environment.  It is fitting that for World Earth Day, Thread Tales are putting their gorgeous SeaCell scarves to work in raising awareness about the importance of preserving our most precious resource- the sea from which they originate. For each sold, 10% of the proceeds go to the Blue Marine Foundation in support of their efforts to protect our oceans.
