Lotus Fabric from Myanmar 

Thread Tales Co. was founded on the discovery of our signature Lotus material and ever since then it’s been all about the fabric.

Lotus set the bar pretty high for us right from the start since it is arguably the most sustainable fabric on the planet.
The flowers from which it is produced grow naturally and in abundance in the Inle Lakes where we source it. The Lotus plant is grown without the use of pesticides and no chemicals are used in producing the hand-spun yarn which is made by extracting and hand-rolling the fibres from the stems of the flower. 

The whole process, from harvesting by hand from wooden boats powered by people with oars, to hand-weaving the fabric on traditional looms, is done without the use of electricity. This unique fabric really is hand-produced in every sense. 

We love our Lotus Fabric in its natural colour but if we dye it we use eco friendly dyes. These are free of Formaldehyde, Chlorine, Lead and Mercury, chemicals that are detrimental to the food chain. Even so, we still ensure that the water from our eco-dying process is carefully disposed of. Natural dyes, if used in large quantities are also not necessarily the most eco friendly choice, since they require land and agricultural production in order to grow the plants from which they are extracted. Also, they can have issues with colourfastness, which can be detrimental to the water and of course, this also affects the quality of our product for our customer. 

Lotus fabric production has zero waste. There are many bi-products from the flower including medicines and teas. And what’s more it’s even recyclable and biodegradable. 

This amazingly raw yet soft, warm and water resistant, yet breathable, super-sustainable fabric really is hard to beat. 

Fabric Woven in Nepal- Certified and Sustainable 

In our search for the highest quality, sustainable fabrics, we discovered skilled Artisans in Kathmandu, Nepal. Using centuries-old skills originally developed for weaving cotton, they produce stunning fabrics made from unusual yarns such as Yak, Camel and Merino.

Not All Fabrics Are Made Equal
Our Nepalese yarn is sustainably produced. We use chemical free eco-dyes to produce stunning colour and our supplier shares our ethical values ensuring that our customers can shop for high quality with a conscience. 


Our Merino wool is ‘Museling Free’ which means that the sheep are not harmed by the cruel practice of removing strips of skin from the breech. Merino sheep are typically bred to have wrinkled skin as it produces more wool. However, this ‘wool overload’ can get very warm, damp and urine saturated and attracts flies. The removal of the skin around the breech, plus often forcing the sheep to live on their backs is traditionally done to prevent flystrike and maggots, but there are kinder ways of doing this through proper care, special diets and washing. It is also mostly counter-productive and ineffective, since the raw exposed skin often becomes infected and attracts flies anyway. PETA and other animal rights groups strongly oppose muslesed wool, as the practice is clearly barbaric and unnecessary. 


Our stunning Spun Silk is produced from the waste product, for a zero-waste ethic. The short lengths are obtained from damaged cocoons broken off during processing and twisted together to make yarn, which gives a better quality product. We also like to use Linen, another zero-waste material that uses the whole seed. Flax grows naturally, requires less water to grow and produce than cotton, is recyclable and biodegradable. It’s gentle on the land and is easy to incorporate into crop rotation cycles.
